NO FREE PASS

Dear Modern Day Parents,

Faith Has No Free Pass

A few years ago, I was organizing documents for an upcoming trip and found myself staring at a stack of passports in my hands. One for me and three for my boys. At first, it made me smile to think of traveling to my home country with them. But as I was arranging everything neatly into a travel folder, a simple yet profound truth hit me: No matter how much I love my children, I can’t use my passport for them. No matter how close we are, my visa doesn’t automatically become theirs. And no matter how tightly I hold their hand, the border agent will still ask for their documents. They will inspect their name, their identity, and their approval to enter.

It doesn’t matter that I’m their parent. They still need their own passport and their own visa. My relationship with them doesn’t grant them a free pass. And right in that moment, the Holy Spirit whispered a parallel about faith so clearly.

As parents, we do everything for our children. We feed them, guide them, protect them, teach them, and support them. But there is one thing we cannot do. We cannot believe in Jesus on their behalf. We can model faith and nurture their hearts. We can pray over their beds and whisper Scripture as we tuck them in. But salvation? Surrender? Following Jesus? Those are decisions they must one day make for themselves. Just as a passport cannot be inherited, faith cannot be inherited. It must be owned and carried personally.

John’s Gospel reminds us:
“Yet to all who did receive Him… He gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12

Notice it says, “all who did receive Him.” Not “all whose parents believed.” Not “all who grew up in Christian homes.”

As parents, we long to protect our children from everything, especially from pain, confusion, poor choices, and spiritual danger. We wish we could hand them a ready-made faith, packed neatly like a suitcase: “Here, take mine. Use mine. It contains everything you will ever need.” But faith doesn’t work like luggage. We can’t transfer it, loan it, or check it in for them.

And sometimes, this is the hardest part of spiritual parenting. The realization that our role is to guide, not to guarantee. To sow seeds, not to control growth. To model faith, not to manufacture it.

Our role is to GUIDE, not to guarantee.

Our children will one day stand before God with their own hearts, their own decisions, their own relationship with Jesus. And though we walk with them as long as we can, that moment is uniquely theirs, just like the passport they must present at the border.

Parents, even though we can’t believe in Jesus Christ for our children, we can believe around them. We can create a home where faith feels real, not forced. Where Jesus is not just a name they hear in church but a Person they see in you. And my prayer is that one day, as God works through your example, your prayers, and your love, something beautiful will happen. I pray your children will reach for their own “passport of faith,” deciding for themselves that Jesus is worth following.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is recorded in John 4:42:

Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.”

I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to express the above verse to my mother, recognizing the impact her faith has had on my own journey. Over the years, I have also prayed this scripture for my boys, asking God to help them discover faith in Jesus that is truly their own and to say to me one day, “Mom, we believe not just because of what you told us about Jesus, but we know Him for ourselves.”

My hope and my prayer for you and your children is that one day, your children will embrace their relationship with Jesus, not simply because they witnessed your Christ-like example, but because they have encountered Him personally and learned to walk with Him themselves.

💎 At Gems for Generations, we believe faith is a journey — one that begins with us but ultimately becomes our children’s own beautiful walk with God.
