WHAT INSPIRED ME TO WRITE CHILDREN'S BOOKS, DAY 4

WHAT INSPIRED ME TO WRITE CHILDREN'S BOOKS, DAY 4

Suddenly, I realized that it was my responsibility as a parent to lay the foundation of faith and truth from God’s Word, the Bible, to my boys. God was inviting me to live a life that continually points my children to Him.

He helped me to look at it this way: That I was to introduce my children to who their real parent is—God. My job is to impart to them what I know about Him, with the hope that they (my boys) will one day prioritize knowing Him and His Son, Jesus, for themselves.

And God made sure to emphasize to me that my part was not to make them know Him but to tell them about Him. Planting the seed of His Word was my part, and His part was to bring about the increase.

Looking back, that was exactly what my mom did for me. She planted the seed of God’s Word in my heart. God was the one who eventually made it grow. Generally, most kids spend a reasonable amount of time with their parents from birth until they leave home for college or a career. Therefore, we have a greater opportunity to share God’s Word with them than anybody else.

With this revelation now in my heart, I started doing one-on-one Bible “sessions” with them. Honestly, I felt I didn’t know enough to teach them, but I still stepped out in faith. God used this same “Myself” essay guideline to encourage me to teach my boys.

A few examples of “Myself” essay questions that I asked them were: How old do you think God is? Where does God live? How tall is God? How big is God? What is God’s favorite food? Whatever answer they gave, I would write it down. We would then discuss the response and open the scriptures for answers. We even created a scrapbook to go along with it and started reading lots of children’s books that addressed those questions.

My spiritual mom encouraged me to have a journal for each one of them so I could keep a record of them. All my children’s books: My Mommy’s Name is Mommy; God’s Unblinkable Eyes, The Mysterious Fence, and How Big are God’s Ears, all came out of my sessions with my boys.

Our Bible sessions usually take about 15-30 minutes per week with each child. The irony is that, instead of me doing all the teaching, God has used them to teach me so much, and they continue to teach me. I refer to them as both my students and teachers.

My oldest and middle sons now write their sessions in their journals with some guidance from me. On days that I get tied up with something, I encourage them to take over and do sessions with their younger brother.
